The Bedlington terrier was first known as the Rothburg Terrier in the Hannys Hills of England. Joseph Ainsley of Bedlington owned the first dog known to be called a Bedlington terrier. The breed was originally bred in Englandfor hunting.
Bedlington terrier is a graceful, lithe, well-balanced dog with no sign of coarseness, weakness or shelliness. In repose the expression is mild and gentle, not shy or nervous. Aroused, the dog is particularly alert and full of immense energy and courage. Noteworthy for endurance, Bedlingtons also gallop at great speed, as their body outline clearly shows.
The Bedlington Terrier is often described as looking like a lamb on a leash, probably because it has fur with a linty texture. This is a nonshedding coat. The Bedlington terrier’s color is blue, sandy, liver, blue and tan, sandy and tan, liver and tan. In bi-colors the tan markings are found on the legs, chest, under the tail, inside the hindquarters and over each eye. The topknots of all adults should be lighter than the body color. Patches of darker hair from an injury are not objectionable, as these are only temporary. Darker body pigmentation of all colors is to be encouraged.
The head is wedge-shaped with sparkling eyes. Although it looks meek when reclining on the couch, the Bedlington Terrier is argumentative and every inch a terrier when aroused. Its body shape is unusual for a terrier, being somewhat like a Greyhound or Whippet in construction, which enables it to gallop at great speed. However, the front legs are constructed differently from coursing hounds in that the front legs are closer together at the feet than at the elbows. This enables a Bedlington Terrier to turn or pivot quickly when chasing quarry at high speed. At a trot, the Bedlington moves with a 'mincing' gait, picking its feet up in what appears to be a dainty manner.
They are groomed with large patches of fur on their heads and ears. This is because the breed used to hunt rats, which would try to claw at their ears or head. With the fur, they just became entangled in it.
